Sedation dentistry is commonly used to help anxious patients relax when receiving treatments and can even be used for less anxious patients to make them more comfortable during certain procedures. Sedation dentistry ensures a safe, painless way for all patient types to receive the best treatment. At our clinic, we use two forms of sedation dentistry – nitrous oxide and oral sedation.
Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, produces a mild, euphoric effect, reducing the person’s ability to feel pain. It is a painless and fast-acting sedation that will help the anxious and non-anxious patient alike. The gas is administered using a face mask which allows the dentist to control the amount of the sedative you receive. Nitrous oxide wears off once the procedure is finished so you are able to drive home and go about your day as normal after treatment.
Oral sedation is another simple and needle-free sedation option for those who may be anxious about their procedure. Oral sedation involves taking a sedative pill one hour before treatment. This will help the patient relax, while allowing them to stay conscious throughout the procedure. Due to the drowsy effect of this method, we ask that you have someone drive you home after treatment.
Sedation Risk Factors
Both methods of sedation can produce a ‘temporary amnesia’ so the patient has little to no recollection of the procedure. This is a welcome effect for the patient making the treatment quick and painless. These sedation methods are incredibly safe and produce little to no side effects when used. However, some risk factors do apply and if you have any of the following you should speak to one of our dental team so we can assess the right sedative treatment for you:
- Certain respiratory illnesses
- Certain allergies to medications
- Uncontrolled high blood pressure
Your safety is our priority at Family First Dental, so please provide us with all details of medication you are taking, allergies and any illnesses you have. This will ensure we provide you with the best care for your individual needs. Rest assured, you are in safe hands with our trained professionals and we are always happy to answer any questions you may have.
